On November 15, the United Nations marks our species reaching a population of 8 billion. Even as deep inequities and environmental risks persist, humankind has made extraordinary strides in life span, prosperity, cutting disaster losses and slowing resource depletion - so far.
What comes next is largely a function of the opportunities, or lack of them, for the largest single generation in human history. In 1800, there were 1 billion people. Today there are more than 1 billion teenagers. The capacity of women and girls to shape their own futures is a key.
