Title:  Monitoring lines in the Mediterranean Sea and in the Southern Ocean: Investigating sub-annual and long-term scales

Abstract: Oceanographic studies have always benefited from the opportunity to conduct repeated observations of the water column during different years or seasons. This has allowed for the investigation of seasonal, interannual, and long-term variability of the water column and its effect on its biochemical properties. Despite the growing importance of remote sensing and unmanned Lagrangian observations (e.g. ARGO Floats), the systematic collection of data along a designed track still holds enormous scientific value in the scientific community.

University Parthenope manages two long-term observing tracks and several moorings in the Mediterranean Sea and Antarctica. Glider observations in the Mediterranean Sea started in 2014 along the so-called ABACUS line between Mallorca and the Algerian coasts, while Antarctic observations have reached 30 years of continuous observations.

During this seminar, the details of these monitoring lines, the instrumentation used, and the resulting differences will be described, providing the background for the scientific results reached in recent years. Glider data collected in the Mediterranean Sea, as well as XBT data in the Southern Ocean, will be presented to describe the mesoscale properties of eddies and provide interesting information about the long-term variability in the area the Mediterranean Sea and the Southern Ocean.
