LDEO Earth Science Colloquium presents:

Science Storytelling: A conversation with Simon Winchester and Marguerite Holloway and discussion with Lamont Scientists

Come discuss science storytelling with New York Times-bestselling author, journalist and broadcaster Simon Winchester in an interactive Q&A session. Simon will be in dialogue with professor and science writer Marguerite Holloway of the Columbia Journalism School. After the dialogue, we will open the conversation up to scientists at Lamont, to discuss creative ways to communicate their science.

Simon Winchester is the New York Times best-selling author of such earth-science-themed non-fiction titles as The Map That Changed The World, A Crack in the Edge of the World, Atlantic, and Krakatoa. His most recent title is The Breath of the Gods, about wind and its effect on how humans experience and interact with the world. He is also the author of the acclaimed The Professor and the Madman, on the development of the Oxford English Dictionary. In 2006, he was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire for his services to journalism and literature.

Marguerite Holloway is a Professor of Professional Practice and Director of Science and Environmental Journalism at Columbia University. She has written about science — including climate change, natural history, environmental issues, public health, physics, neuroscience and women in science — for publications including the New York Times, the New Yorker, Natural History, Wired and Scientific American, where she was a long-time writer and editor.
