Impact of magma, volatiles, and climate on continental rift evolution

Abstract:

Continental rifting is a fundamental process critical to the development of divergent plate boundaries, yet the available tectonic forces required for the breakup of thick continental lithosphere are often insufficient. This presentation explores whether magma, mantle volatiles, and climate-induced surface processes can overcome these forces and assist in strain localisation and fault system evolution in extending continental lithosphere.
