LDEO Earth Science Colloquium presents:
Simon Winchester, Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), is the New York Times best-selling author of earth-science-themed non-fiction titles such as The Map That Changed The World, A Crack in the Edge of the World, Atlantic, and Krakatoa. His most recent title is The Breath of the Gods, about wind and its effect on how humans experience and interact with the world. He is also the author of the acclaimed The Professor and the Madman, on the development of the Oxford English Dictionary.
Simon Winchester entered St Catherine's College, Oxford, in 1963, to study geology. He graduated in 1966 and found work with Falconbridge Nickel Mines, a Canadian mining company. His first assignment was to work as a field geologist searching for copper deposits in Uganda. In 2006, he was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire for his services to journalism and literature.
The Earth Science Colloquium Series, sponsored by Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and Columbia University Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (DEES), provides a lively forum for discussing a wide variety of topics within the Earth sciences and related fields. Colloquia are attended by the full range of scientific and technical staff at LDEO. Colloquium attendance is required of all pre-orals DEES graduate students.
