The Earth Science Colloquium presents:
Tools for hope: lessons learned (so far) from applying counterfactual thinking, scenarios, and ArtScience to disaster science
with Dr. Yolanda Lin, Assistant Professor, Director, Center for Advancement of Spatial Informatics Research & Education (ASPIRE), The University of New Mexico.
How can we incorporate elements of hope in the way we approach disaster risk and resilience? In this talk, I will discuss approaches to catalyze active hope in the field of disaster science through counterfactual thinking, co-created scenario development, and collaborations between artists and scientists through ArtScience. By applying a lens of hope to traditional disaster risk assessment and reduction methods, this work can support more equitable decision making and help prepare communities for uncertain futures in the face of natural hazards and disaster risks.
Host: Dr. Einat Lev, Lamont Associate Research Professor, Seismology, Geology and Tectonophysics, LDEO.
The Earth Science Colloquium Series, sponsored by Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and Columbia University Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (DEES), provides a lively forum for discussing a wide variety of topics within the Earth sciences and related fields. Colloquia are attended by the full range of scientific and technical staff at LDEO. Colloquium attendance is required of all pre-orals DEES graduate students. The Colloquium Series supports the Lamont Seminar Diversity Initiative.
