The Lamont Earth Science Colloquium presents:

Harnessing the Power of Earth Observation Data for Ocean Ecosystem Monitoring and Resource Management under Changing Climate

with Dr. Joaquim Goes, Lamont Research Professor, Biology and Paleo Environment, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory

Across the globe, a vast web of autonomous remote sensing technologies—satellites, underwater vehicles, and ocean buoys—are continuously streaming invaluable data. These datasets offer a window into the hidden dynamics of our oceans, revealing crucial trends and shifts in ecosystem health as our climate rapidly changes. However, unlocking the full societal potential of this data requires not only cross-disciplinary collaboration but also innovative approaches to turn raw information into actionable insights for sustainable resource management. This presentation will highlight ongoing research in our lab at LDEO, with a focus on the Arabian Sea—one of the most rapidly changing tropical ecosystems on the planet. We will demonstrate how laboratory and shipboard experiments, alongside field and remote sensing data, are revealing unprecedented ecosystem changes that are threatening regional food, water, energy and national security. Part of this presentation will showcase a few decision support tools being implemented to help nations mitigate the socio-economic risks arising from these unprecedented climate-driven ecosystem changes

The Earth Science Colloquium Series, sponsored by Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and Columbia University Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (DEES), provides a lively forum for discussing a wide variety of topics within the Earth sciences and related fields. Colloquia are attended by the full range of scientific and technical staff at LDEO. Colloquium attendance is required of all pre-orals DEES graduate students. The Colloquium Series supports the Lamont Seminar Diversity Initiative
