LDEO Earth Science Colloquium with Dr. Greg Hirth

February 14, 2025
3:30 PM - 4:30 PM
America/New_York
Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, 61 Route 9W, Palisades, NY 10964 Monell Auditorium

The Lamont Earth Science Colloquium presents:

Rheology of the Interface between the Mantle Wedge and the Subducting Slab

with Dr. Greg HirthInterim Vice President for Research, Professor of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences, Brown University.

I will present results from experimental studies and the application of lab constraints to subduction zone conditions near the base of the seismogenic zone.  Topics will include lab studies on the rheological behavior of serpentinite (Burdette and Hirth, JGR, 2022) and talc (Shabtian and Hirth, AGU 2024), the role of pore fluids on viscous creep behavior (Okazaki et al., JGR, 2021; Waech et al., AGU 2024), and an integrated analysis of pressure solution creep in subducted sediments, relevant for understanding interseismic deformation along the subduction zone megathrust (Fisher and Hirth, Science Advances, 2024).

Host: Dr. Peter Kelemen, Thomas Alva Edison/Con Edison Professor, Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, LDEO.

The Jardetzky lecture was established in 1992 by Dr. Jardetzky's son Oleg, who was the founder of the Magnetic Resonance Laboratory and professor of molecular pharmacology at Stanford University. In endowing the lectureship, Dr. Jardetzky said he hoped it would "help enrich the outstanding tradition of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, which provided a much cherished intellectual home to my father after he emigrated to this country."
