The Earth Science Colloquium presents:
Seventy Years of Seismic and Volcanic Monitoring and Hazard Mitigation in the Eastern Caribbean: Challenges, Innovations, and Lessons Learned
with Dr. Erouscilla Joseph, Director, Seismic Research Centre, The University of the West Indies.
For over 70 years, the UWI Seismic Research Centre (SRC) has monitored volcanic and seismic activity in the English-speaking Caribbean, covering 19 active volcanoes. This presentation reviews the Centre’s contributions to hazard assessment and volcanic risk mitigation in a challenging multi-hazard environment. Despite advancements in monitoring techniques like seismic and geodetic networks, maintaining preparedness has been difficult due to volatile volcanic and political conditions. The SRC’s role in managing crises, such as the 2020–2021 La Soufrière eruption, underscores the importance of collaboration with authorities and communities. Lessons learned from these efforts highlight the need for adaptable communication and innovative technology in future monitoring efforts.
Host: Dr. Einat Lev, Lamont Associate Research Professor, Seismology, Geology and Tectonophysics, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory
The Earth Science Colloquium Series, sponsored by Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and Columbia University Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (DEES), provides a lively forum for discussing a wide variety of topics within the Earth sciences and related fields. Colloquia are attended by the full range of scientific and technical staff at LDEO. Colloquium attendance is required of all pre-orals DEES graduate students. The Colloquium Series supports the Lamont Seminar Diversity Initiative.
