The Earth Science Colloquium Series presents:

DENDROCHRONOLOGY: The FUTURE is the PAST

with Dr. Edward R. Cook, Ewing Lamont Research Professor, Biology and Paleo Environment, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.

The title of my talk is both self-evident and metaphorical. Dendrochronology is above all a science of the PAST as recorded in the annual radial growth patterns of tree rings and the wood properties contained within them. So, how does the PAST predict the FUTURE here? Tree rings cannot predict the FUTURE. Rather, dendrochronology is built like any other science on PAST scientific accomplishments of others and unsolved problems that propel it into the FUTURE with a lot of learning along the way. This is the theme of my talk drawn mostly from my own experiences.

The Earth Science Colloquium Series, sponsored by Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and Columbia University Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (DEES), provides a lively forum for discussing a wide variety of topics within the Earth sciences and related fields. Colloquia are attended by the full range of scientific and technical staff at LDEO. Colloquium attendance is required of all pre-orals DEES graduate students. The Colloquium Series supports the Lamont Seminar Diversity Initiative
