Dr. Martin Visbeck, Professor, GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research.

Celebrating 75 Years of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory from the perspective of Martin Visbeck

This colloquium honors the enduring legacy of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory as a global leader in ocean and climate science, marking 75 years of pioneering discovery and innovation. A decade spent at Lamont was influential for the career of Martin Visbeck, who has advanced the frontiers of ocean observation, climate diagnostics, and international collaboration. From deep-sea expeditions to ocean and climate knowledge, his contributions exemplify Lamont’s spirit of exploration and data-driven understanding of a changing ocean. Looking ahead, we explore how international cooperation and digital twin technologies offer transformative potential for sustainable ocean governance — linking past insights with future innovation in pursuit of a resilient blue planet

Host: Dr. Adam Sobel, Professor of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics; Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Ocean and Climate Physics, LDEO

The Earth Science Colloquium Series, sponsored by Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and Columbia University Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (DEES), provides a lively forum for discussing a wide variety of topics within the Earth sciences and related fields. Colloquia are attended by the full range of scientific and technical staff at LDEO. Colloquium attendance is required of all pre-orals DEES graduate students. The Colloquium Series supports the Lamont Seminar Diversity Initiative
