Title: Drought induced tree mortality in the western Mediterranean forests
with Dr. Dario Martin-Benito, Associate Research Scientist at the Institute of Forest Sciences (ICIFOR) of CSIC-INIA (Madrid, Spain). Dr. Benito is currently at Harvard Forest as a Bullard Fellow. He was previously at Lamont from 2010-2013 as a Fulbright Fellow.
Abstract: Increasing aridity poses a major threat to forests globally, altering tree resilience, growth, and survival. Species-specific functional constraints and their interactions with other biotic and abiotic environmental factors modulate the impacts of drought on resilience and species mortality and result in contrasting mortality patterns. Understanding the effects of these factor helps explain the contrasting mortality patterns among tree species and to assess the impacts of global change on forests. The complex process and mechanisms involved in tree mortality require its analyses at relevant time scales. Here, we investigate the effect of long-term drought increase and intense hot drought on different tree species in the Western Mediterranean using different tree-ring proxies including quantitative wood anatomy and stable isotopes to derive intrinsic water-use efficiency and transpiration. These proxies provide insights into the process of tree decline and mortality such as hydraulic adjustment and carbon-water relations and contribute to understanding forest dynamics in response to aridity under global change.
