GreenDrill An Adventure Through Ice & Time
GreenDrill scientists have been working in Kalaallit Nunaat, a place you probably know as Greenland. They are hunting for clues about the past to better understand how that will relate to our future! Their work has taken them to the far north where they planned to have camps in 4 different locations to drill through the ice into the rock below. They want to sample the rocks to learn when they were last free from ice cover! To learn all about it you can follow their adventures through entering the Escape Room linked below!
A series of activities, an escape room and an interactive map will guide you on this adventure. The activities are designed for Middle and High School aged students as well as life-long learners! Try one or all of these and join in the adventure...but we should warn you to BEWARE of the mischievous Qivittoq, a Greenland mythical creature who continually creates misadventure. We thank Maria Bach Kreutzmann from Nuuk Greenland for generously sharing her Qivittoq drawing for us to use and teacher Beverly Owens from Cleveland Early College High School in North Carolina who created the multiple resources to support GreenDrill: An Adventure Through Ice & Time through an NSF program for Research Experience for Teachers.
Use the links above to start your adventure and note that slides open in a new browser tab so you can always come back to us to continue exploring!
- EXPLORE - Use the link to Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory that takes you to the GreenDrill webpage where you can learn more about the science. Or jump right to the Escape Room where you can test your skills on Greenland knowledge!
- DISCOVER - Track the changes in the Greenland Ice Sheet that have been measured by NASA's GRACE satellites!
- LEARN - Hear from Qupanuk Olsen from Nuuk Greenland as she shares about living in Greenland from her Q's Greenland series!
And be sure to try some of the additional fun activities below to learn more about the special place and the special people of Kalaallit Nunaat / Greenland.

They introduce some of the current research underway in Greenland to study the history of the Greenland Ice Sheet to better understand its future and how that relates to the rest of the world. Through these resources and activities we introduce information about weather and climate, the Greenland Ice Sheet, Greenland culture and mythology, science research, science teams, geography and more.
