Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, 61 Route 9W, Palisades, NY 10964

This webinar is to kick-off the PERN’s cyberseminar on “The habitability concept in the field of population-environment studies: relevance and research implications” is taking place from 13-20 March 2023, organized in collaboration with members of the HABITABLE project consortium (the University of Vienna and Hugo Observatory) and the Columbia Climate School Managed Retreat conference series. A link to instructions on how to subscribe to the PERNSEMINARS discussion list can be found at the bottom of this message.

The seminar aims to explore the relevance of the concept of habitability for the field of population-environment research. It will address past critiques of concepts like carrying capacity and concerns over environmental determinism, while recognizing that we live in a world of finite resources, bring in perspectives on systems dynamics and thresholds, as well as approaches that acknowledge human agency.

The Cyberseminar will be moderated by Marion Borderon (University of Vienna). A background paper is available on the Cyberseminar page, and expert panelist statements will be posted successively during the cyberseminar. The panelists include:

·Aliyu Barau, Bayero University

·Carol Farbotko, the University of Melbourne

·David O’Byrne, Lund University

·David Wrathall (Oregon State University), Alex de Sherbinin  and Radley Horton (Columbia University), and Michael Oppenheimer (Princeton University),

·Harald Sterly, University of Vienna

·Luke Kemp, Cambridge University

·Maria Gavonel, University of York
