This webinar is to kick-off the PERN’s cyberseminar on “The habitability concept in the field of population-environment studies: relevance and research implications” is taking place from 13-20 March 2023, organized in collaboration with members of the HABITABLE project consortium (the University of Vienna and Hugo Observatory) and the Columbia Climate School Managed Retreat conference series. The seminar aims to explore the relevance of the concept of habitability for the field of population-environment research. It will address past critiques of concepts like carrying capacity and concerns over environmental determinism, while recognizing that we live in a world of finite resources, bring in perspectives on systems dynamics and thresholds, as well as approaches that acknowledge human agency.
The Cyberseminar will be moderated by Marion Borderon (University of Vienna). A background paper is available on the Cyberseminar page, and expert panelist statements will be posted successively during the cyberseminar. The panelists include:
